Pitch Black

Rating: 4 out of 5.

(spoiler-free movie review)

Richard B. Riddick is my favorite Vin Diesel character. He portrays the lone-wolf quintessential anti-hero perfectly. Pitch Black released to theaters in 2000 and was directed by David Twohy(The Arrival). The movie has spawned a series of sequels and video games(Escape from Butcher Bay, on the original Xbox, is excellent) and has garnered a cult following.

– A scene from the movie Pitch Black starring Vin Diesel.

The movie is far from perfect and often veers into b-movie territory but where it excels is the cinematography. The alien landscapes are beautiful and the transition from the bright over-exposed daylight to the darkest scenes, towards the second half of the film, is effective.

The movie was shot on-location in the Australian outback and only had a sixty day shooting schedule. The resulting film is visually interesting and features some stand-out action sequences, including an excellent crash scene.

Pitch Black is an enjoyable science fiction/action movie that warrants a watch for fans of the genre.

My Rating: 4 of 5 Stars
